The native format of DVD is MPEG2, so there is no benefit in using H.264, you are just decompressing and recompressing for no gain. If the DVDs are commercial then the MPEG2 file will be encoded using CSS; however if they are your own DVDs, then they probably aren't encoded and you don't need to rip ...
