One major fault with that article....
Credit cards haven't been used as age verification for about a year. This was stopped by Visa USA, as they give credit crads to under 18's. Daddy pays in $xxx and little Johnny or Susie can spend the money how they like. That's why Adult Verification Systems (AVS) are now called Adult Entertainment Networks (AEN).

Pathetic isn't it. You spend the first year or so of your life having naked tits thrust in your face and now some idiot decides nudity is "harmful to minors".

If they won't allow credit cards to be used for age verification any more because under 18's can get them. Tell me what the difference is between that and age verification programs? They all ask for credit card details aswell. Whats to stop a 16 year old with a credit card signing up to an avs?

Neil...
There really shouldn't be anywhere on the net calling itself an AVS any more... If there are, then Visa USA will soon force them to make drastic changes.
I've been working with most of the major former AVS since 1999 and over the last 2 years they have all had to change their methods. Most importantly not being able to call themselves Age Verification Service which is why they are now Adult Entertainment Networks
A credit card cannot be used to verify age as in the past.

I think a lot of companies base their servers in the US because it is cheap. In the long term, it doesnt really matter what the US courts say. If the porn sites find US law restrictive, they can simply have their web servers based in a more "porn friendly" country, Holland perhaps? Thats the beauty of the internet, you base your site in the most convenient country, US laws dont cross borders.

Accredited banks offering Merchant Services all refuse to accept "adult sites"
This includes banks and clearing houses in "liberal" countries such as Holland, Spain etc.
ccbill. ibill, veritel etc. have a monopoly granted by the cc companies.
The double standards extend not only to contries but to the heart of finance in the shape of finance houses themselves.
"One law for the rich", etc??????????
The sheer hypocricy of the world is a source of constant wonder/humour/frustration to even myself to whom very little is new.

US servers are cheaper but start pushing 20mbps+ of bandwith each month and non US servers are work out very expensive. The US is cheaper simply because they have the infastructure and fat pipes to handle vast amounts of traffic unlike most non US servers.
As Marcus says, CCBill, Ibill etc do have the monopoly as there are few reputable "adult" CC processing companies out there who both the surfer and webmaster trust.
*If* this law goes into effect, we will have to pull all free movie trailers and censor all "graphic" images.
Just makes you wonder what laws will come into effect later down the line if this does happen?
