Keeping the fave film theme with..

Heat and Blue Velvet in the same league as The Usual Suspects - sorry but no cigar on that theory. TUS is well-scripted, well-shot, well-scored and above all well-acted. Blue Velvet has one extraordinary performance in it but is otherwise pretty much unremarkable. I love Heat - but they forgot to edit it and that puts it out of the mix. Whether TUS is a masterpiece - that;s an awfully strong claim for any film but in this case I think well justified.

As to Hitchcock - Rear Window cuts muster for me.

A few lads visited Leicester Square some years back to see the Usual Suspect film as everyone was raving about it especially the 'twist' at the end, so we decided to lay of the lager and go in sober and see if we could 'suss' out who the villain was. We got to the cinema and lo and behold, the main poster had 'It Was Him' pointing to the scrawny bastard at the end of the line up. Bastard or what? All was not lost, we hit Soho instead and got ripped off....as per usual!!

Sad to hear, Ace. I knew absolutely nowt about TUS apart from the general line up and general story but only generally. I try hard to avoid trailers, media etc as they invariably ruin a film. Was i the only one wo guessed the outcome of 'Shattered' in the opening credits based on the bits and pices the media had fed me? You can read the back of a video/dvd box too and get to much info. Just turn a total blind eye to all media for film and it does work for me.

I like TWM too. Beautiful film. Did you know that around 6 years ago Ingridd Pitt was having a Halloweeny type party at a place in Somerset or thereabouts and included in it was a climactic burning of a same sized Wicker Man near a cliff top? Another fave of mine which is incredibly underrated is 'Night of the Eagle'. Great stuff

i read that it was cut but it was on tv years ago and the scene with britt ekland doing that pagan dance was there in sure.

Yes it was cut, Steve and the video is too at about 83 mins, it should be 101 i think. As usual the missing footage isn't anything too strong but it's all about seeing what the director wanted to show you. Chopping some apparently harmless footage can totally change a film.

Good point. Mind you, a worse scenario is when everyone goes on about some brilliant twist or other, then - lo and behold - it turns out to be the oldest one in the book and you spot it immediately. This happened with The Sixth Sense. How anyone couldn't suss that one in seconds flat I'll never know.
