What is the difference between a standard DVD - R and a DVD Authoring disc .... ? Should i be using a Authoring DVD disc to make my master copies or what.
Also ....
Would you prefer cheaper DVDs without all the fancy covers etc or is it important to you to have the covers and you pay a little more.

I'm not an expert on the technicalities, but do have some experience of trying to play the different formats.
DVD-R disks will play on some DVD players but not on others. Plus I've had DVD-Rs from one source which played fine on a Cyberhome DVD player, but the same format from another source which would not - from which I conclude that some are authored or burned better than others.
DVD+R disks, the rival 'home-made' format, on the other hand, would not play on that DVD player but would play on an LG player.
On the other hand 'proper' DVDs from big porn companies and non-porn DVDs bought in the High Street will play on both devices.
I'd guess that some people would like artwork and standard boxes but those who are trying to save space (or hide them from relatives) would prefer CD jewel cases. Some don't care about artwork whatever its size. Who can say which would be in the majority.

In general I have found that the DVD+R format is more compatable with majority of modern devises, but as alec quite rightly said it is a minefield.
Also writing direct from editing software, how on earth do you put more than 1hrs material on a disc ??
Basically in my opinion if you are writing your own DVD's expect to get returns from unhappy punters who's systems are uncompatible with the format of DVD disc supplied.
DVD-R DVD+R a bloody nightmare why oh why could they not just have one industry standard format it would save a hell of a lot of confusion.
If I was buying a writer I would opt for DVD+R, as I have had fewer cases of incompatability problems with that format, but maybe I have just been lucky.
I always author to a DVD+RW that way if it mispresses it gives you the option to rewrite the disc.
