Can't say i've got much time for Best. Sure, good footballer in his day, but otherwise a complete waster. His recent antics have caused offense to a lot of people. His article in today's Mail magazine is appalling. The whole article makes him out to be a saint and he seems to be slagging of his wife (who seems to have made a lot of sacrifices in her life for his benefit) also claiming SHE has a drink problem(!)
He talks quite openly about how basically he can now 'get it up' wheres at times in his life, he hasn't been able to - George, I for one don't want to know about this.
And he ends the article quite abruptly by claiming he knows exactly how he'd top himself, should he ever decide to. A particular bottle of Champagne and a bottle of Brandy.
It's all quite sick if you ask me, I cab't believe that Newspapers are even giving him the column inches.
What annoys me most is that when he finally does kill himself through drink, he'll become an even bigger 'legend', and people will be going on for years about what a loss it is and how great they thought he was.

....in stark contrast to Jimmy Greaves (to whom Best should have listened a little more attentively).

Here, here. And you'd have thought this self-mythologising bore could have at least paid some thought to other, fellow alcoholics, very many of whom won't have had his wealth and will have gone through worse. Romanticising the issue - his vain suicide fantasy being just one instance - proves to be just another pointless stumbling block for anyone sincerely trying to recover.

Another Oliver Reed in many ways

Brilliant but flawed

Just glad I'm not a Celebrity-fame & money but at what cost

I guess everybody has their own ways of dealing with pressure
Some more destructive than others

It'd be interesting to now how many livers he'll be the recipient of---and the destroyer of---before he finally drinks himself to death. Check out our version, Jim Baxter:

It's amazing what the public is willing to forgive or overlook just because someone was a football star. Best, and to a lesser extent Baxter, had the world at his talented feet, but was content just to piss his future against a wall. Okay, alcoholism is a disease, it's a compulsion, but plenty of people manage to win their small battles against it every day of their life.

You don't have to be an alcoholic for alcohol to become a problem

Just binge drinking once a week will do the trick

When you realise how little alcohol the human body can cope with before damage is done is quite scary when you think about the last pub crawl you were on where you consumed about 20 standard drinks compared to the recommended daily max of 3/4

I've no doubt I'll be looking for a new liver in another 10 or 15 years

cheers

......and a few brain cells.
Can't remember (not surprisingly) how many thousand little grey cells die every pint, but it's an awful lot.

Sorry, where was I?
