The family jewels?
Another example of this 'editing' by the brain is the one where you write a sentence that has two consecutive 'the's, but the second one begins the the next line:
Your brain 'parses' the text so as to agree with what you EXPECT to see rather then what's actually there.

1, How do you put a giraffe in a fridge?
Open a fridge door, put in a giraffe and then close the fridge door. (easy)

2, How do you put an elephant in the fridge?
Open the fridge door, take out the giraffe and put in an elephant, then close the fridge door. (obvious)

3, The lion calls a meeting for all the animals. They all attend except one, which one?
The elephant............because he's in the fridge. (Getting the hang of it now)?

4, You have to cross the crocodile infested river. You have no boat and it's too wide to jump. How do you cross safely?
You swim.........................All the crocodiles are at the meeting.

Sorry about that, but it's fun.

I did think of that.....with mongooses/mongeese/mongi, I eventually resort to: one mongoose- and another one.
My classical Muse tells me that 'platypodes' would be the correct form.

Look, I know they're a bit bendy when they're born, but they're still six bleeding feet tall.
