question for jason

Post by jeffhaskeft »

hello,
me again
ive bought the dvd rw and fitted it into the spare port as i have decided to keep the original drive in place so i guess i will make it either a slave or primary drive
anyhow i believe the wide gray wire is called a IDE wire now the problem is there doesnt seem to be a spare one to connect my new drive to do i have to buy one and how will i connect this up to make it work?
many thanks on this.

ps i have found the power cable so ok with that. lol

IDE cables have normally got 3 connections allowing two devices per cable so its worth checking this first. If you only have one cable in the PC (one connected to the CDRW and one to the HDD) then if you bought the drive retail (i.e. in a shiny boxed!) there should be an IDE cable included but, if not, you will have to buy one. PC World sell them but charge something stupid like ?15 each whereas you can get them for about ?4 online.

When you buy it you basically need to plug one end into the free IDE slot on the motherboard (there will be 3 in total, 2 of one size which are the HDD ones and a slightly smaller one for the floppy drive). If you are putting it onto a cable of its own you dont need to worry about whether its a master or slave but you probably will have to go into the BIOS and tell it the new drive is there - normally whehn the machine is just starting up you press a key (F2 perhaps but it will say on the screen) to get into the BIOS and then go into the first settings screen and look for primary master, primary slave, secondary master and secondary slave. One of them should have your HDD assigned to it and one your existing CDRW - as CD drives usually default as slaves then change the free slave one to AUTO or CDROM and that should be you done!

hi jason
right ive had a good look around inside there are 3 ide cables inside 1 goes to the hard drive(i assume) 1 goes to the floppy drive and 1 goes to the cdrw drive
so obviously im only interested in the cdrw one anyhow ive noticed that all 3 cables have what i can only call a bracket(maybe a juction thingy) say about half way down each cable now im guessing but do can i connect this to my new drive?
now if this is the thing to do which drive is best to set to primary/slave?
sorry for the long winded explanatories but i dont want to f**k things up
many thanks
