"Plug and Play" that doesn't.

Post by mart »

Anybody got any useful tips when your computer doesn't react to a new bit of hardware?

Some hardware (some HP Deskjet printers, for example) dont like it if you install them that way and make you use the installer on the CDROM - also some devices like scanners and cameras are funny if you plug them in before installing the software so best option is to read the manual and follow the instructions there.

If you have tried that and it still wont work then post what device it is here and what (if anything) is happening

I guess you've been into system properties

right click-my computer
left click-properties
left click-device manager
left click appropriate installation to see if there is a conflict with another program

Of course if you can't find it theres obviously a real problem with the installation....dodgy software....uncompatibility

I had 4 goes at installing my printer...eventaully it took...so there is hope

Whats the plug & play anyway or is this a what is it mystery?

cheers

what is "it"? is this a quiz? :P

If you want help then post as much info as you can about your system and the guilty, dodgy piece of kit!

Sorry guys, I don't mean to be mysterious.
The item in question is a Belkin USB Videobus ll, video capture.
When I first tried to install it I got as far as the load drivers bit then the drivers couldnt be found, something went drastically wrong and I had a total system failure.
Now that my system is restored it doesn't recognise that a new piece of hardware is plugged in so I can't even get the item installed. I'm operating on Windows 98SE.

Have you read this article/manual Mart?

Doesn't sound to promising.....if you stuffed up the initial installation correcting it can be nigh on impossible with Windows 98 & Windows SE98
So it says

Gee thanks Deuce.......lol
I don't know why I am laughing.
Well I've got the drivers loaded but I can't get a pic. All I want to do is get the image from my digital camera onto my laptop. Not the recorded image, that's too easy, but the same image that appears on the LCD pre. recording. I can do that Camera>TV via a Video out on the camera and, in theory the Belkin USB video capture should do the same thing but its fiendishly complicated. I'll just keep fiddling (and bugger that smoke coming from the direction of Rome).
