Hi Alfie,

I have had both a Philips and a Panasonic DVD Recorder with varying results.

I had a Philips 880 Dvd Recorder, and for a time it worked well, however within about 3 months of buying it it went faulty. A new Lens on the laser pickup was fitted. It then started to partly write to a disk then it would go into recovery mode (this happened a lot) so i was wasting a lot of particulary expensive DVD+R media.

After a lot of shouting at the retailer i bought it from they offered to exchange my Philips for a Panasonic DMR-50 which i accepted. Now this machine has not got as much functionality as the Philips but IT WORKS. I have archived at least 200+ hours of video from VHS to DVD and have probably had 2 disks rejected by the recorder. It has loads of AV Connections including SVHS in and out. It uses the cheaper DVD-R media although it uses the DVD-RAM re-writable format which is less common

All i can say is the Panasonic i have got has been far more reliable than it's Philips counterpart. A word of warning though do not contemplate buying any DVD Recorder with a PVR/Harddisk fitted i have been told these really do have some reliability problems.

We sell both where I work. Of the 10 (approx) Philips, nearly all have come back faulty at some stage. Of the 30 odd Panasonic we have only had one faulty. The DMRE50 is the popular one that does what 95% of people need.
Panasonic are due to change models in the next couple of months so it may be worth waiting until March.
