Re: Derby City
Hi I live just a few miles away from Derby and it's nothing special,it's ok for shops and the nightlife is ok,where I live (Ilkeston)people tend to go to Derby rather than Nottingham for a night out due to Nottinghams growing reputation for violence. It's a pleasent enough city just not alot to do there,as for women I suggest you try Nottingham it might be rough but you cant beat it for ladies.
Re: Derby City
I used to ge there , and Nottingham on business. I can see if you were married with a family you would love Derby , there are some old fashioned pubs , and good real ale as well. I found the girls very sociable around there , and not as stuck up as some southerners .
Nottingham is only a 15 minute drive , it's a lot more livley and seems more druggy to me .
Spectacular scenary , and wonderful twisty roads , lined by drystone walls , as you go west over the Pennines .
So English provincial , but good EP , if you can live with that you will like it , if like me you want to be close to culture , then it would not work.

Thanks for responding guys, and with such good posts too, I really appreciate it as its very important to me. I went for my interview at derby uni today and was overwhelmed by the whole scenery in derby and around to be honest (including) nottingham. Q. different to Norfolk!
Anyway not that you guys care but to round off my post...I was accepted onto a foundation year art and design with the intention of following up with a full degree in graphic design. The building and facitilies looked excellent inside. Although I kinda wanna study architecture as well/instead and am deciding whether or not to defer and earn a shitload of money to take with me or look elsewhere for architecture....
Nottingham has an excellent architecture dept but im guessing would be hard to get into. Ive had a lot of mixed reactions to derby, lots of ppl said "its shit", they obv havent lived in the middle of norfolk countryside for 21 years but still...it seemed realllly nice and how bad could it be if your 15 mins from nottingham....just go there when you wanna go out ?!
as for the women... I didnt see a non pretty/attractive girl all day, many were stunning although to be honest i didnt see that many people my age about strangely...ah well.
Thanks for listening....its therapeutic
PS heres a web site ive liked for a while, rather entertaining but makes you feel guilty for liking it ...

Good luck at University, you are certainly in for a good time in Nottingham. I went out there one night recently and the place is full of good pubs (I'm a pub bloke rather than a club bloke), one was an old church that had been converted into a pub and another one was tailor made for a rock'n'roll nerd like me as it was "Themed" to look like a gothic building inside and played only hard rock music. I even heard some Rush! In a pub!
There was a good vibe around the town too although I'm sure there are plenty of twats around who enjoy causing bother, just like everywhere else sadly.
There was a story going around my neck of the woods (Essex/Suffolk border) a while back that in Nottingham the women outnumbered the blokes at a ratio of five to one and they all looked like the cast of Baywatch. This was obviously bollocks but it still inspired one of our mates to CYCLE from Sudbury in Suffolk to Nottingham and back!

Re: Derby City
on another point if you like outdoor sports you're within great reach of some top climbing areas
we are Leeds.... , and we can still beat the mighty Chester
Re: Derby City
For a Uni course go for it and good luck , you may even find you can get some accomodation with a roof that keeps most of the rain out at a price that is only worryingly high . You are in Bass/Banks/Marstons territory so you won't remember much anyway .
I think the Nottingham girls looks myth goes back to lace making days when they could nick some lace and tart themselves up . There is still an area called the Lacemarket .

A design for life?
Well done, ID.
However, after that foundation course - which you could find a bit of a slog compared to the cakewalk that is the first two degree years - neither GD or architecture may have the same appeal. If not, then I might say go for the latter: I'm not quite sure how high Derby sits in the graphics rankings, and I've been told we might be creating a surplus of graphic designers in the near future, though at least you should be up to scratch regarding the latest developments GD-wise should you take it up. The one thing you shouldn't do is take the path you think will benefit your wallet most, regardless of those crippling loans. Art, man - it just doesn't work that way.
Whatever - fucking enjoy it anyway.
BTW - what other Universities did you consider?

Hey Last Word, thanks for your post. I think you could be right about the course, but then worst case scenario is I come home after a yearand then Sort something else out or not. Its all really been a viable option for a small period of time now, and i finished my alevels 3 years ago.
im certainly not thinking from a financial perspective, ive done enough office days work to know that being happy doing something you enjoy is more important.....and as for the loans, well thats a small part of the dilemma, if i deferred and waited another year i could go sept 05 with like ?8000 maybe? maybe more if i got a labouring job....whereas if i go now ive got a dying laptop....a car i still owe ?1000 on....etc.

that is a risk yeh, its taken me 5 attempts at reading that sentence to understand it lol, dumbass. Even the interviewer guy was saying architecture is less popular with young students because it doesnt fit what they deem as contemporary or something. argh i dunno ive got a lotta options....what to do, where and when, all varying.
im really grateful to you guys cos i love your input on important things. its good to get more experienced peoples thoughts on issues.
oh and Art...i dont wanna study art,(thank god) im not an artist really, just creative when it comes to things like design...
thanks for reading my stupidly long posts again:)
PS - oh to answer your question, i didnt apply to any others this year as it was a rush job and the closing dates were over.....i thought the one year at derby seemed a really good option....and id q. like to be in the midlands i think, there'd be a lot going on - good for me prob?

i live in Derby, ok for going out on the piss, women are ok but nothing special. however if you are a student you'll be ok for cheap ale, lots of offers on for students and Zanzibar nightclub does deals. where in Norfolk are you from? lived in Great Yarmouth for a year, ok in summer but dire in winter!!
