He's the lead singer of a band called the Libertines. Been in the press a lot because he's a heroin addict who's been in rehab three times and failed. He got sacked from the band last year because of his problems - like not turning up for gigs.

Apparently, things got so bad at one point that the band's management had to hire bodyguards for Pete and the lead guitarist, Carl because Carl was threatening to kill him!!

Their first (and only album so far) is supposed to be brilliant.

libertines are one of the most overrated and frankly shit bands ive heard in recent times....its all this crappy hype and soap opera esque life drama thats just getting in all the papers. their recent song i heard on the radio the first time and i thought it was a cover of an old classic song...but it turned out to be them. either way they still pretty much suck. one of the Clash produces their albums....dumbass

Yes, very true.....I got the debut CD on a Clash fans recommendation, and was very disappointed, especially as Mick Jones (Clash guitarist) produced it and turns up for a turn at gigs.
Pity when a junkie fucks up what promises to be a decent band....or worse, OD's as Malcolm Owen from very promising punk band The Ruts did.
The Clash had Topper Headon on heroin, so I'll take that on the chin before smart arse forumites 'remind' me that 'my' bands weren't whiter-than-white

Libertines are pretty good, but Doherty is addicted to more than Crack & Heroin - More than the drugs he's addicted to attention and publicity hence the high profile tabloid interviews and incidents like the one Steve mentioned. Who knows - it seems likely to me that he could have just made that one up.
The Libertines invented their own legend to start with, but events surrrounding Doherty have reached circus proportions. They chucked him out of the band til he gives up the drugs that have taken him over, he says he'll give up if they let him back, etc etc. He's gigging with his other band Babyshambles, but fails to turn up for a number of gigs ( and always trots out the same lame junkie excuses "It wouldn't have been fair cos", "someone upset me" etc). High profile attempts at rehab failed, he just doesn't want to give up. Many fans and associates reckon on him dead soon.
Sad to see such a talent wasted, but that's the glamour of drugs.
It certainly isn't harming their sales.

Very true, RD, and much of the press attention strikes me as pre-emptive ambulance chasing (especially from the broadsheets), as if making up for their infamous, embarrassing lack of coverage for the Kurt Cobain/Richey Edwards dramas that cost them a lot of ground. Got to be in touch with 'the kids' these days, haven't they.
