Smile is not a new project.
It was supposed to be the follow up to Pet Sounds in 1967 but at
that time Brian was in no fit state to finish it because of his drug
use and a nervous breakdown.
He tried to match what the Beatles were doing at the time (Revolver
Sgt Pepper etc) but most people only wanted the Beach Boys to go
on singing their surf hits so there was some disagreement between
Brian and the rest of the band, and the record company.
Some of the old Smile tracks surfaced, such as Good Vibrations,
Heroes and Villains and Surfs Up, and the Beach Boys did release
an album called Smiley Smile that used some of the tracks.
I recently rediscovered the Beach Boys and downloaded many of
their tracks from Kazaa. Some of the less well known songs that
Brian produced were wonderful, and in fact Pet Sounds was mostly
all Brians work, with the rest of the guys adding the vocals after
he laid down all the backing tracks with studio musicians.
Worth reading 'I just wasn't made for these times' by Charles
Granata which charts Brians role in the Beach Boys.
