[The Last Word]

It's all very well knocking the script and acting in this new trilogy, it more than deserves it, but the most overwhelming failure lies with the visuals. Lucas simply hasn't given us as memorable a vision as he did first time round - the rest of cinema has caught up, and he's been caught short. His is a tricksy, overloaded aesthetic, with every slick frame bearing the blurry smudge of expensive software. Yes, it all matches together, but so what? There's no sense of artistry any more, just the numbing thought of rows of computers groaning under the weight. Compare it to the invigorating approach Peter Jackson took; almost every element of LOTR had been plundered (a fair bit by Star Wars), yet the fluid fusion of natural/theatrical interiors and exteriors (to name but one element of his game) helped bring it to life in a manner light years ahead of the competition.

Lucas obviously sees himself as a director of the old school - cinema as a purely sensory experience, and to his credit he's got the right idea. But the only notable sensation we've had so far is a growing tedium, in an area he once excelled. Shame.

As for Episodes 7,8 & 9 I heard they were going to bring in Aliens and Predators. Hell, those franchises belong to Fox. A bit of clever writing and merging characters and presto! A super mega hit for the multiplexes. If Fox executives steal my idea, I'm gonna sue!!!!

If it belongs to Fox I'd lay odds you'll see the US marines arriving to save the day....hopefully they arrive before 7,8 & 9 are in pre-production and Lucas can be taken away for his own protection
