It might be a very simple thing to fix. Check the volume settings on your desktop. I've had programs crash on me before that have set the volume sliders to zero. Games usually do that to me.

I only have W98 but I assume XP will have the same sort of setup to this.

Start >Programs >Accessories >Entertainment >Volume control
