One thing you might try is to copy the DVDs on your PC.
I have had some success turning certain unplayable DVDs into playable ones by copying them.

Apparently, the copying program was not copying bit by bit, but used redundancy information to recover faulty bits.

Nice idea but since they freeze my system how do I play them in order to copy them?

They are genuine disks from a small UK producer. Maybe I should at least query whether anyone else has had problems.

Try using dvd decrypter

To stop your pc trying to play the disc and locking up, do the following:

Right Click dvd drive letter in explorer and click Properties
Go to tab AutoPlay and select DVD Movies from dropdown list
Select "Take No Action" and press OK

Now when you put the disc in, dvd-decrypter (or any other software) should be able to read it as data and the system won't hang.
