Opening corrupt .jpg

I may have a faulty downloader. A lot of recently saved pics won't open.
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer says "No preview available."
Irfanview says "Can't read file header! Unknown file format."
Properties says they are .jpg, all the others in the same sets (which open) def. are.
Anyone have any experience with this problem? And, more importantly, how to sort it?

Its when I read stuff like that I realise how little I know.

Finding it is easy,bit of trial and error with the search criteria but always start with the Error message in between " and " then google it and your bund to turn up something

Computer forums are still the best bet IMHO

Understanding solutions proposed is the hard part given that no PC is identical
