Trial by TV ? Saddam

Plus the Chavscum would end up performing to the cameras, hoping for their big break onto Trisha or some other nuts and sluts show.
We have need of you again, great king.

But who chooses which trials to televise---and how much of it is shown? For five hours' worth of entertainment watching Archer or Aitken squirm, you'd have to endure weeks of mind-numbing evidence. Or, if you just want the selected highlights, why bother with a legal system at all? Live trial by television, with the host (or judge) shouting, "Send in the next criminal!"
You'd get bored, I'd get bored, if they showed the whole thing. ITV's Crown Court was as much as anyone not involved and not called up for jury service could put up with.

That's what I said- I'd be all for the WHOLE thing being shown. Edited snippets, you don't get the FULL picture, can be misleading.
I'm not disputing what you say, photo- I was backing it up and chipping in my two pence worth. If you thought I was anti freedom of speech you missed my point! I'm all for it, like any normal guy- though you do have to be scrupulous in the interpretation thereof!
I'm all FOR a US-style OJSimpsonesque trial-on-TV scenario, not just for Saddam, but retrospectively, it would have been good for an Archer or Maxwell. Spare Barrymore, trial on TV would be too harrowing for the family involved.
It would get boring though, entertainment wise.
Take it easy, time for bed.

He was a brutal dictator ... but then again are so many others in power today (Mugabe), or the ones they let get away, like Idi Amin. There are plenty of double standards and it's pretty obvious from the state of Iraq, they need someone like Saddam to keep them in check - and no matter how many he killed, it would never have matched the numbers we killed in order to free them.
The trial of Slobodan Milosevic is probably worse because he was actually an elected leader ... just because we didn't like his selected enemy, how foes that make him a criminal, apart from maybe the methods he employed - but at the end of the day it had a lesser effect than carpet bombing Baghdad or Tripoli before. If his was a crime then so were the actions of Bush & Blair.

Re: Trial by TV ? Saddam
Just a quick question regarding the double standards issue. The 1st charge that Saddam is facing alleges he killed a load of people after a failed assassination attempt on him. So that would mean that killing someone that tried to kill you is wrong. But one of the dozen or so reasons George Bush stated about going to war was because, 'he tried to kill my Dad'. So if Saddam should be tried in this way, then shouldn't George Bush? Just a question. Or should be accept that the world is run by force and not law.
Also, do you think that the reason they are using this charge, is because it is the only one the US & UK Governments didn't support at the time, such as increasing weapons sales after Halabja, and encouraging the Iraqis to rise up after Gulf War I, saying they would help them, then pissing off, just a thought.

The reason they are focusing on the assasination attempt is because Saddam did'nt just kill the people involved, he extended the death sentence to their wives, children, extended family and friends. Wether this is true or not I have no idea but as I understand it, this is the reasoning of the prosecuters in proceeding with this case.
As for the hypocrisy involved regarding George Bush snr and jnr, your absolutely right. It's a shame the world is'nt as cut and dried as a goodie/baddie scenario. Theres plenty of blame and guilt to be spread around and it's extremely unfair that one horrible dictator will hopefully get his comeuppance but other democratically elected tossers will probably live long priveledged lives as rich men and never have to pay for the darker things they have done.

We must be careful on this issue because this is not just Sodin Insane on trial here it's more like East versus West and if he is found guilty what that means to the other Arabic states.
Can we really tell the world how it should be run just because we have the biggest guns and is our democratic way of life best for them. If so why can't I freely buy porn and why am I jailed if I reffuse to pay my 40% tax bill! Oh yes of course because I'm FREE.
You'll recall the trail of that other guy Slobering Thetoserbolox and what a great day out at the circus was made of that well no doubt the trail of Suddam will be the sequal. I watched that pacman (he's a computer game) bloke asking questions on news night and apperantly the trail was put back because the country had not got a published court procedure available to the public to deem it democratic. So they are now mass mailing the people of Iraq explaining what a judge is and what laws they now have.
So with all that it's Michael Jackson and the simpsons all rolled in to trial TV showing on a screen in your house.
