Sky Gnome query

I have purchased a sky gnome and I have connected as advised.

The sky gnome does not change channels on sky and i cannot see a menu as the screen is always blue.

I can listen to the channel playing on sky upstairs but i am unable to change channels.

I contacted sky and they said I should get a new datalink adapter. Would this solve the problem and would I then get a menu on the sky gnome.

Sky customer service seemed to have a set list of things to do and they got stuck when it didn't work.

I am thinking of returning it so if anyone can help.
