Heh heh... most of the ones mentioned above are sold sans lens but that is sound advice.

And film vs digital? No debate, digital won't be able to compete fully with Medium Format and Large Format for a long time, we are almost at 35mm but at 15k? To get more pixels you have to squeeze more of them into a size limited sensor. Smaller pixel sensors will be less efficient at collecting light and so you will get noisier images. Besides we will all be shooting 32bit HDR soon anyway (Photoshop CS2 is already compliant).

Nikon everytime, for the sub ?1000 pricemark the build quality, features and image quality with Nikkor lenses outperform Canon every time.

Of course film is still better than digital for some things, I still have the Hasselblad I bought in 1981 and the images from that are awesome, but I hardly ever use it these days as 99% of my work is for the internet. Using film for the internet is like popping a zit with a 44 magnum.

Told you they were good! Another cool Nikon-related thing is the Nikon dealer, "Grays of Westminster." They are truly a first class operation, only a few times in your life will you will recieve customer service like you get from these guys. To cap it all, having completed your purchase, you sit in the wood-panelled office while one of the staff writes out your receipt in ink...fabulous! Even if you've only bought a lens cap or something you exit feeling like a God!!

EOS20D all the way, takes the full compliment of Canon Lenses, improved my shooting no end...

Well the general convention is that Portrait's are shot on 135mm lens so I would suggest 24-70mm and 70-200mm telephoto lenses to cover all bases. Sigma are pretty decent lenses and are available in Canon or Nikon Mounts, but if you go for the Nikon or Canon for that matter and can afford it go for Nikkor lenses.
