ADHD.
Most council estate kids seem to suffer fron it, which gives their unemployable parents an excuse for their offspring being little shits, whilst claiming benefits into the bargain.
Does it really exist, or are we merely making excuses for attrocious behaviour and paying out fortunes to some very undeserving causes?

I have ADD.
It exists alright.
Q. How many ADHD kids does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. Let's go play on our bikes!

Whilst I am as cynical as anyone about chavs, I do have first hand experience that ADHD does exist, although I am unsure what can be done about it.
My younger brother has it, and it does affect his life quite a lot. He finds it nigh on impossible to see a job through properly and moves on from a to b to c without ever finishing what he started. He had it as a toddler, he could never sit and play with one toy for anything more than a brief moment before he moved onto something else, but the doctors told my mum she was being over-concerned and she just had to cut down his sweets and drinks... over 20 years later and he still has the same problem. He is not unintelligent by any stretch of the imagination, yet you can count the number of books he has read on one hand. It affects his career prospects too, he has great enthusiasm every time he starts a new job and then the enthusiasm wains and he loses interest, he has become a local joke cos of the amount of cars he buys to do-up and then moves onto something else before it is finished (I think there are 7 dotted about here and there at the moment)... and yet every time he gets one "it's the one" for a couple of weeks. He has been to a dcotor recently but all they said was "...no sign of any schizophenia or serious mental illness".
We are not looking for excuses but the pattern of his life so far indicates he isn't going to get very far unless soemthing is done.

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

I think the thing about ADHD is that it's a meaningless blanket term for a variety of conditions, some of which share certain characteristics. For example high-end autism and severe manic depression, (bi-polar disorders), both have elements which could be grouped under ADHD disorders.
The popular perception of ADHD is of kids from feral council estates, buzzed up on sugar and processed shite, before they move onto the drugs, causing mayhem. To me a lot of this kind of diagnosis chooses to ignore the total absence of parenting and dietary habits of certain sectors within the most disadvantaged social groups. By giving it a medical classification we avoid confronting the fact that society has become completely unstitched in certain socio-economic brackets and no one knows how to cope with it. This in turn, does a disservice to people who do suffer from some kind of probable neurological disorder that manifests itself in short attention-spans and disruptive behaviour.

An easy scapegoat the Government Uses to help people understand why these problems happen is Video Games. the new whipping Boy. Used to be Video Nasties. before that TV violence. Rather then look at the root problems they look at the Media. As Chatterji points out the roots are Bad Parenting, bad diets, poor peer choice. These are the real problems yet they are ignored time and time again instead easy targets are drawn up and piss poor policies are drawn up to show the community that the Government are on the ball.
I knew 2 Children who had ADHD and their Parents where told that a change of diet would help, in thier case it did, they are different kids now. It will not work for everyone sufferng from this Complaint but it showed a little of what can be done to improve the behaviour of at least some Children who become aggressive. More research and the money to do it is whats needed not blaming easy media targets. Game companies are regulated to death where as the food companies are hard to regulate.

ADD and ADHD exist in their own right seperate from other mental disorders. I have no doubt of that. And although factors such as social deprivation, bad diet, bad parenting, substance abuse etc. may play a part sometimes they do not. The disorder may have genetic roots. I have not suffered from any of the first four factors but my father has ADD.

Vallium!
It is said that both love and truth walk hand in hand. But if the need is great enough, can we learn to love a lie?

But why pay out benefits?
as per subject.
?80 per week tax free for every 'ADHD' kid they have.
Why do they need to be given an extra benefit????!!!!
I'm not disputing ADHD does exist and affect some kids, but with this sort of money going free, it's not diffy to see why ineffective parents want to blame their poor parenting on something else, and be paid good money into the bargain.
The sooner this payout is stopped the better.
