True story is the 'Birdman' died on the same day as JFK was assasinated, but recieved no coverage for it, then when the belated story was to run, Oswald was himself killed by Jack Ruby, so it was 10 days before the world found out Robert Straud (The Birdman) died. Incidently, Straud was a nasty bastard who was guilty of anally raping younger inmates before being sent to Alcatraz, and not sent there as the film depicts for any other reason. Anal rape was rife in US prisons, but a taboo subject that couldnt be mentioned in a film at the time! So being surrounded by 'birds' wasnt what he had in mind no doubt, although he was a genius in his field.
