You are liable for Customs import duty, if the amount of duty is ?7 and over and for VAT, if the value of the goods is ?18 and over, from destinations outside of the EU.

However in this case Fedex have shafted you big time. Duty is 5%, VAT is 17.5% so you should have paid an extra ?5.62 (on ?25) but the duty would be waived as the total is less than ?7, so you should have only paid ?4.37 extra.

So Fedex have shafted you for ?28.

As Steve56 points out a ParcelFarce charge is about ?8 plus the duty ?4 and there is the ?12 Steve56 was talking about.

Get on the phone to Fedex.

Bastards. Chase it up and kick up a stink.

But you should have smelled a rat immediately: I don't know the exact figures, but even in rip-off Britain the import duty should only be a fraction of the value of the goods - not 30% MORE than their value.

They've taken you to the cleaners, Old Son.

I get alot of stuff from the US delivered by Fedex, the delivery man never asks me to pay for import duty on the doorstep.

I get a seperate letter about two weeks after the delivery has been made and I pay it over the phone.

My last bill was for ?16.09 on a ?45.45 order.

Which if you do the maths is 5% duty waived (not over ?7), 17.5% VAT and ?8 charge to FedEx.

Kick a stink up rocky12345 'cause something is deffinately not right.

The trick is, if possible, get the sender in the US to tick the box marked "gift" on the label, then u should be ok
I had a shock a couple of years ago when I bought the Rolling Stones 1971-1989 cd box set from a yank on eBay, it was good value but the knobs at customs wanted 21quid "duty" though how the wankers valued the set I don't know....
I got a Syd Barrett box set off Ebay in summer, made sure the sender ticked "gift" which he duly did and I got a bargain...

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

The cheeky delivery bloke even used my phone to ring his delivery base so I could give them my credit card details.
