My version was 7, however to upgrade to version 8 wasn't an option.... So I upgraded to 7.0.8.

I hope the last number being an 8 is what the BBC are referring to.

There is a version 8 of the reader, see my initial link to adobe. I did the same and updated to 7.0.8 and then checked the adobe site.

I'm now running verion 8.0.0

I didn't intentionally ignore your Adobe link.... just thought I didn't need it as it was already installed.
You would have thought our existing versions would have linked to the proper "current" version

Anyhow with your help, I'm up to date with version 8.
