I never had a problem with this, but my computer is protected like you wouldn't believe.

Turn off ALL Java in your browser, except for when your on a Java run site YOU CAN TRUST. Every day, delete the ENTIRE contents of your Temprary Internet Files Folder & the Temp Folder. Get yourself decent Anti-Virus, Firewall, Spy Bot/Ad programs.

I run tween 2-3 of each of them programs on my computer (with NO CONFLICTS either), & I am always on dozens of diff sites daily, with no problems.

The safest thing, if your not sure about a PROGRAM/ADVERT/WEBPAGE, close the fucker down.

I can only add to what SD says.

Firewall (don't use the propietry Windows XP one - it's not good enough)
Anti-Virus

AdAware
Spybot: Search & Destroy
Spyware Blaster

Crap Cleaner

Use frequently and update frequently.

Firefox browser with Adblock extension

If you are using a Router - turn the Firewall on, it should be your first line of defence not your PC.

That's my set-up and I don't get problems even with Java on all the time. The worst I get are "Tracer Cookies".

Stats for January from my Firewall were - 5805 spyware blocked and 740 attacks blocked and no problems.

Apologies for my lack of computer knowledge as I am a novice but how do I delete stuff in the Temp Folder? (not the temporary internet files).

Crapcleaner will do it or:

1. Click Start > Run

2. Type %Temp% > click OK. A folder full of files and other folders will appear

3. To remove individual folders or files, hold down your Ctrl key while left-clicking on each item you want delete. Release the Ctrl key when you're finished. Or to delete all use ctrl+a to select all. Then hit Delete.

4. Confirm that you want to delete the files by clicking Yes.

5. After all of the files have been deleted you can close the window and empty your Recycle Bin.

If you get an Error Deleting File or Folder message while the files are being deleted. This just means that one of the files is in use by a program right now. Click OK, close all open programs, and repeat the steps above.
