Your dealer is talking bollocks

I work for a major car manufacturer and deal with problems like this everyday.

When you buy your new car from the dealership you should take along your copy of your original V750 the dealer will give you a V317 to complete or if you have already removed the reg off your vehicle you will have a V778 form sent via the DVLA. The dealer will then request a V55 from the manufacturer who will send this off to the local office for a transfer. On average this process will take about 5-10 days depending on peak season volume ie march and september plate change.

So when you go to pick up your new car it should have your select mark on it and the DVLA will give the dealership a new reg mark for your old car.

I changed my car on March 1st, bought a 2nd hand demo & took the forms to my DVLA office on the Thursday & picked them up & had the new plates on on the Monday morning.
