Tried it but nothing except a buzzing noise. Is there something in the control panel that needs clicking on?

It could be any number of things. Do you have a sound card, or does your motherboard have audio in/out?
You could have on-board sound, but you've not enabled it in your bios. Then again, it could be enabled but if you've got a sound card too, then that's conflicting/taking priority.
For starters make sure your speakers are turned on, and at about medium volume. Click 'Start' > 'Control Panel' > 'Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices' > 'Adjust System Volume' and make sure your device, nor speakers are muted, with audio levels around medium. This is just to check that XP (i'm presuming?) isn't muting anything. After you've checked XP isn't at fault then stick in a CD into your DVDROM drive and play the CD.
If you can't hear anything then it could be as I stated in the first paragraph: Onboard disablement in the bios, or a conflict (if you have a sound card too).

Also it could be that your jacks are bad or wrongly color-coded, both of which have happened to me w/ new PC's. Try another set of audio-out jacks, & check your headphone output jack to see if it works.

Re: PC Problem..HELP
It's not a brand new PC and i have 98 not XP.
I tried using a CD and it's come up as
"Error Cannot playback audio stream, no audio hardware available or hardware not responding"
I've looked on the microsoft website and i've either not got a sound card or there's a problem with it.
Does anyone know how to check?
Again as i said earlier i'm not that knowledgable about computers. If i do need a sound card what the hell do i do?
Cheers for the help
