Recently the Discovery channel ran a documentary about the 1960s, and they called it the Beatles decade.
Anyone who lived through the 1960s (as I did) knows the contribution the Beatles made to music, song writing, musical styles, hit singles, albums, instrumentation, fashion, in fact many many things.
Even the Rolling Stones, who were a real blues band, felt so overshadowed and threatended by the Beatles they made a Beatles type phycadelic album called "Their satanic majesties request" which you have to say was awful and was soon forgotten.
When the Beatles started making it big in 1962 the pop world was dominated by single male acts (Elvis, Cliff etc). There were very few groups. The Beatles changed all that.
When the Beatles started making it big, in about 1962, very few people wrote their own songs. People like Cliff Richard, Adam Faith etc recorded
songs produced by tin pan alley. The Beatles changed all that.
When the Beatles started making it big in 1962 few pop artists played instruments on their own songs (except maybe the Shadows), it was usually session musicians. The Beatles changed all that.
In the late 50s and early 60s NOBODY from the UK EVER made it big in the USA. A few people tried but gave up. The Beatles changed all that. They led the British invasion.
In the mid 1960s most LPs consisted of a couple of hit singles and about 10 filler tracks. Rubber Soul by the Beatles in 1965(?) did not contain ONE hit single, a VERY rare occurance in those days. They also wrote EVERY song on the album.
AND every song on the next album, Revolver, AND every song on the next album, Sgt Pepper. And many of those songs are still being played today.
If they are overrated why did Cirgue de Soleil produce a whole show, called Love, based around the Beatles songs, nearly 40 years after they broke up, more here:
Years after an event it is always difficult to see why an artist (of any sort) was considered so good at the time when their "art" becomes the norm.
Beethoven's early music was considered music of the devil and is now considered standard classicla fare, people booed Stravinsky's Rite of Spring on it premiers, and it is now a classic.
People like Glenn Mller, and Elvis were idolised when they started but it is sometimes difficult to see why nowadays.
Just listen to Revolver, a classic. 14 songs, all written by the Beatles, and with so many different styles: Pop, rock, folk, soul, ballads, phycadelic. Can you imagine hearing this album for the first time when it came out, not 40 years AFTER it came out.
You may not LIKE the Beatles, but overrated they were not.
