Another Useless Fact!

Post by Sam Slater »

The average human has between 1.5 & 2 square metres of skin.

Air pressure at sea level is around a ton per square metre, making our bodies fighting this weight, plus our own weight caused by gravity.

Since space is a total vacuum; if an astronaut took off his space helmet during a space walk -even just for a second- his head would probably explode & body torn apart.

This is because, since we have around 2 tons of air pressure pressing down upon us, our body needs to equalise that pressure from the inside to push back. Air & water molecules do this.

In a vacuum, we'd have a situation where our own body is pushing a couple of tons of pressure outwards but nothing pushing against: thus, exploding bodies!

Very true.

A great movie example of that is 'Outland' starring Sean Connery.
