The fuel tax protest would have lost the government serious money. Remember, they work out 1 or 2 years in advance how they are going to spend it, so they would have had to slap an emergency tax on something else. Food ? Beer ? Baby milk ? Holidays ? Whatever, it would have made them unpopular.

Making R18 more accessible might actually get the government more tax. Legit sales instead of cash t blokes with vans. Fewer internet purchases in Amsterdam.

C'mon Tony, you know it makes sense ! !happy!

At the moment it's perfectly legal to buy Evil Dead - Chainsaw Edition at the supermarket, or Hostel. Or Execution, which depicts genuine judicial executions.

And supermarkets have better age-checks than internet downloads and dodgy dealers.

In practice, most supermarkets take the "family retailer" route, and don't stock real shockers. But most towns have 3 or 4 retailers in walking distance who have a wider stock at reasonable prices and use common sense. Even some large villages.

What I have suggested is a safeguard, to prevent ordinary shops turning into full blown sex shops - not more than 10% of the stock/sales should be R18. That way your local cornershop will still sell bread, milk, papers and hobnobs, along with enough alcohol to cause serious brain damage, glue, fireworks, lighter fuel ... oh you get the idea.

Thanks Magoo, I know it is Gordon, but "C'mon Tony" just sounded better. I'd prefer not to analyse why.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up. The petition calls for sensible even handed rules, while allowing the government moral justification, so it has some chance of being taken seriously.

To really get a bandwaggon rolling it needs to be high up the most signatures list, to get noticed. At the moment it is on the 4th page under the Leisure and Culture category - just 13 more signatures would shift it into the 3rd page.

If you haven't signed up already, and want hotter TV please add your name. If you are shy and don't want your Mum or Boss to see your name you can use a pen name (keep it sensible please) as long as you give a genuine email and click the confirmation. :)

For what it is worth, the government has not staked everything on a particular position - for or against - re porn. If anything it is being pragmatic, same as for late night drinking, gambling and so on. There is a genuine case that current laws feed organised crime and undermine age controls. Do they really want to be seen supporting that ?
