Cathy come home

Post by Shelley Louise »

IMHO absolutely brilliant BBC drama.

Caused an outrage when it was first broadcast and nudged the government to make changes around the issues of homelessness and apparently the charity Shelter was founded because of it.

Anyone else seen it?

Decades ago. It was just too harrowing to watch more than once.

One of the first docu-drama type programs and certainly the best.

Not comfortable to watch even 40 years on.

I can remember seeing it - although it might have been a repeat?

Apparently the director had to make the children cry for real. Very disturbing even decades later.

It's a pity they don't make programmes with such impact, as this had, today! Too busy conning the viewers with telephone scams!

Im pretty sure that the young child was Cathy White's own which adds to the impact of the scene..

Never knew she died in the 1990s until I looked her up today.

Up The Junction was another ken Loach classic.

Very true.

One excellent series was the Play For Today...........that had some blinding topics that were very risque and 'best left unsaid' for their time

The West London of my youth is now on dvd
