Hes an original

Seen him interviewed a few times and he's no ones fool

His song lyrics?

Strange and unfathomable spring to mind but thats the quirky nature of REMs music

I got given a best of double CD of the 1982-87 years labelled the I.R.S years

Alternative would be an understatement

Saw Ronson on electric proms last week and enjoyed that show

Must be an age thing.
I am about the same age as Trumpton and though I have heard of REM, when they first came into prominence they completely went past my radar too.

I suppose one of the reasons was simply their name: bands with 3-letter names (abbreviations?) signalled hip-hop to me [yes, I know now, REM have nothing to do with hip-hop - but then I wouldn't wait long enough to find out], and I switch stations when the DJ threatens with hip-hop. Can't stand the stuff, and don't start me on "sampling"...

They were never on my radar in the first place.
