So true Carac. To be fair though, today's society isn't so tolerant on mistakes either, making it harder to 'come clean' when something goes wrong. Capitalism means 'get to the top at all costs' and so everyone's psychology is to lie, and cover up your own failings as much as possible, because the wolves WILL make you pay.

The media are to blame for much of the witch-hunting, but I think the public would be more forgiving to a politician owning up to an honest mistake.
The business of politics is dirty. They seldom if ever answer a straight question. They are fed formulaic responses to questions and told that they should not deviate from that formula. And so many of them are lawyers/barristers----people who have been taught to argue a case irrespective of their own feelings on it. This either creates professional liars or people who can convince themselves they are being truthful when delivering a huge consignment of porkies.

I agree re. the media, and I think the media are very influential on what the public think as well.
As with politicians, journalists are masters of spinning something small, into something large, and playing on emotive techniques to rile a reader. Nearly all journalism these days is rife with political bias, rather than just telling us the cold hard facts.
You can't believe the politicians, nor the articles written about them. No wonder people give up caring.
