The The

Post by fudgeflaps »

What a name for a band, eh?

However, had a wee trawl through 'Soul Mining', their most successful and acclaimed album of the early 80s (circa '82/'83 I think), and loved it. Can any of you older lot tell me how popular they actually were, or did they err more on a cult status?

'This Is The Day'........ beautiful, and the best use of accordion in a song to date!!

Input from ye wise music types of olde., hopefully the link will do the music and lyrics justice:

Cheers, ta in advance and enjoy if you are so inclined. !wink!

I do remember the name. Don't recall many big hits though, so I wouldn't
call them a mainstream act. I imagine that makes them more of a cult act

Have to agree with ATS - definitely a cult combo with few (if any) big hits to their name.

I recall them being popular among the "alternative" crowd when I was at university ('81 - '85), along with the likes of Joy Division / New Order / Throbbing Gristle (great name for a band, that!) / The Cure (in their early days) but that wasn't a scene I was into so I can't shed any more light.

The small hits they did have really were top-drawer - Heartland ('this is the 51st state of the USA'), The Beat(en) Generation & a 90's re-recording of This Is The Day should all be played a lot than they are

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

Extremely lightweight, but not unpleasant, pop music of the sort that one might hear playing over the closing credits of a 1980s straight-to-video movie.

I vaguely remember The The.Mainly had a selective fanbase.Released more albums than singles and always sold out their concerts but were no way as big as The Smiths,Stone Roses etc.

Some would say they were very underated.

Not quite that bad. Are you confusing them with the lighthouse family?
Now they make James Blunt sound exciting
