Yes, the old Olympic Flame parade - what a washout! The only people who had the horn on for it were those Tibetans and the BBC presenters who tried to inject some enthusiasm buy brightly intoning, "I'm sure the crowds will turn in the next 10 minutes - before the torch arrives.?
I get the feeling that general interest in the Olympics has been waning for the past decade ? as there are now many more distractions and sources of entertainment than there were 20-30 years ago, when the Olympics were still a big deal. I recall last time round (was it Greece?) when the presenters mentioned on numerous occasions that the stadiums were half empty. An ominous sign of a changing world.
I reckon the Beijing Olympics will be successful. I?m sure the stadiums will be packed out with genuinely excited Chinese folk ? it?ll be a new thing, a big deal for them. And even if it?s not I?m sure the people will be encouraged to attend (though not ordered) and be suitably enthused.

Re: Will the London Olympics be a success?
what annoys me is before "we" won the games there was no money to do up the area ,no money for this,no money for that etc etc etc.....
no all of a sudden theres all this money to do it!!!
Personaly Im not bothered about the games ,its not my thing to be honestb but if people enjoy it then fair enough.
But if its only londeners paying for it(I like within the london borough of havering) then all you people out side the M25 can sod off!! you havent paid a penny from your taxes !!

Re: Will the London Olympics be a success?
Well, provided most of the world's top sportsmen/women, judges, time-keepers and event organisers turn up, it should be a success, as usual.
Re: Will the London Olympics be a success?
It will be, For those screwing the taxpayer to build the infrastructure.
Personally, I don't see any 'glory' in trying to run faster than a Labrador or other so called 'sports' that are more usually seen in a circus.
No ideals, Just fame and money.
Is this really seen as a pinnacle of human achievement?

It will be a waste of money. What happens once it's all over?.Not even Leyton Orient wants to move to the the Olympic Stadium.Other buildings like the swimming pool and the gymnastics arena will just lie there lifeless.
Though i'm sure the shooting ranges will come in good use to London's Yoof !laugh!.
If Livingstone has his way, just watch him increase the congestion charge even more,as will local council taxes increase as well to pay for this car crash of a sporting event.
I wonder where the Women's Beach Volleyball will take place?
Canvey Island anyone? !grin!

The taxpayers of Montreal finally finished paying for the 1976 Olympics less than 2 years ago.
That was after the then-mayor of Montreal had promised that the games wouldn't incur any debt and would be self-financing (never believe a politician's promise!).
Expect a similar fiasco for London.

Re: Will the London Olympics be a success?
The council tax payers' in London will be forking out for this for decades to come. The government has diverted monies that should have been spent on sports in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and other areas outside the metropolitan in order to finance this.
The only winners are the "consultants" who "advised" the government on this issue. Lord Coe is set to make a small fortune from his role as a "special adviser".

Re: Will the London Olympics be a success?
I think the big problem about the Olympics depends on if you like sport or not and on what you think it can achieve.
Personally I'd much rather the see the next Sir Steve Redgrave or the next Dame Kelly Holmes than the next Peter and Jordan type.
If it is a British event I also think the entire nation not just Londoners should be paying for it but then I think UK money in general should go across the UK equally be it leafy suburbia or council estate and that it benefits all.
