There are some that are that stupid to want more gangs and gun crime like america.Im sure there is a small minority who listen to rap songs that go on about guns/drugs/police and want that over here.

It may not happen as there is a lot of opposition to it including Mayor Boris, but they have been doing it at the ports for ages i can remember years ago coming of a boat at Dover and walking through customs only to be greeted by machine gut totting police who then searched everyone under the pretence of the anti terrorism act !sad!

Gangsters are getting too hard core these days too so hence the bringing out the big guns is plausible now.

I dont like the sound of it one bit. Especially with an officer who aint gettin' any from 'er indoors or worse still a divorce or depression and decides to take half the place out with him before turning the gun on his sorry self.

O come on Max, stop living in Dixon of Dock green era, and anyway, the rest of Europes Police carry guns its not just the good old US.

Since the fabulous idea of open borders, gun toting crims have found it easy to flood our streets with weapons, the cops need the right tools to a. defend themselves and b. defend us.

Yes I'll agree with you its sad, but thats modern day society for you. 40/50 years ago drug crime barely featured by todays standards.

Lots of interesting comments. I fear a bolt for the suburbs, on mass, as life in urban London worsens. In the USA this has been going on for years, people too afraid to bring their kids up in cities as they are now so violent, and the criminals and the Police are armed to the teeth, that they not only move out to quiet tree-lined streets in the suburbs and slightly beyond, but they live in a gated community and often employ private security guards to look after the private road. Tall fences surround their gardens, large locked gates and a security hut at the entrance to the road, very powerful lighting everywhere. The exodus from the city will probably start soon and the suburbs will be just like what I've desribed. What a shame.

Max - I'm in Perth down under and for years Perth was regarded as a nice safe, quiet overgrown country town (and a bit backward to be honest) where you could walk the streets at night without a worry. But over the past 10 or 15 years the rapid increase in drugs and gang culture in some areas has led to vicious assaults becoming common.

Our police were regularly getting bashed by arseholes, who would often get off with a warning or nothing at all. The state government introduced mandatory jail sentencing amid calls that it wouldn't work and it was an infringement of criminal's rights etc. Well, assults on coppers have virtually stopped - apart from a couple of mentally ill people who will most likely not be jailed because they're not in control of themselves.

Tougher sentences work, but the lawyers hate the idea of crime reduction.

Deano, sadly this sort of American style behaviour is spreading all over the western world. You now get gritty British films - written, financed, starring British actors, and filmed in London - that depict areas of this city in exactly the same way as films have for many years depicted urban America. It is almost depicted as kind of 'cool' - mainly because the people who write and finance these movies are middleclass people from towns just outside London who think all this gritty-ness has a kind of cache to it. They wouldnt think that if they lived in some of these areas. I myself don't - I live in a nice part of London, but just how long this area will remain 'nice' I do not know. I am pleased you Aussies have brought in laws that have reduced crime a lot and shown the scum who do it that it will not be tolerated. I lived in Australia for a year, some years ago, and I really liked the place. I never got to see Perth though.

We live in a police state as the anti terrorist act gives them the right to act as they wish, under the pretence of this act they can stop and search you in the street at gunpoint and even shoot you dead without themselves even being brought to trial, this act is probably the most miss-used act ever written but leading politicians alway claim that terrorism is the greatest threat to this country since WW2 so dont expect any changes soon.

An example of this is that when i and all the other passengers were stopped by police at gunpoint whilst walking through Dover docks under the anti-terrorism act it had nothing to do with National security but everything to do with Social security as the police just passed you over to the S.S. to be questioned, this was back in the good old Duty free days when apparently people on benefits use to ride the boats to claim their duty free allowances when the law states that people on benefits should not travel outside of the UK without first giving prior notice of their intentions, therefore to make sure that this law was upheld everyone coming off the boat was met with a machine gun !confused!
