I'm just back from Austria, just outside Salzbourg. Whilst there I couldn't help but notice that in the town I was in they had the likes of cigarrette vending machines attached to the walls at various places, fairly flimsy looking things too. Also some shops in one case an electrical goods shops had an exterior display case with cameras/mobile phones and so on attached to an outside wall as well with no obvious means of security.
I asked one of my Austrian friends wasn't that asking for trouble and she said to me what did I mean so I said well wouldn't someone come alone and rip it off the wall and steal it. She asked me ' Why would they do that?' I explained to her in Britain someone would be along within 2 minutes of it being put up, rip it off the wall and pinch the lot. She look horrified. I thought for a minute she was taking the piss then I realised she wasn't.

Re: says it all
Wasnt Austria the country that elected the nazi leader not so long ago?
Re: says it all
I'm guessing you mean J?rg Haider (unless this was some WWII reference...). He was elected governor IIRC, but was ousted. He died drunk driving about a year ago.

Inequalities
Hi
It would appear that the extent of inequality as opposed to actual wealth in a country is a key factor in the amount of crime and social disorder.
In terms of wealth the UK is one of the most unequal countries in the industrialised west, surpassed by, surprise, surprise, the USA.

Re: Inequalities
I'd agree to some extent David but ultimately i don;t think wealth affects how someone is brought up. Plenty of lesser well off people don't commit crime don't scab off the nation etc etc.
Another thing I found in Austria is that there are alot less immigrant workers. Now i'm not saying this is a good thing I only mention it to point out that the reason is an Austrian is mortified by the fact of being out of work so they are happy to work in hotels, clean the streets, and do all what some might consider are the lesser jobs in society albeit still important ones.
Whereas in the UK alot of the more menial jobs are being done by immigrants of all nationalities because they want to work whereas our own lot are for the most part too bone idle and more content to sponge than go out in the cold or work long hours in a hotel etc as the state makes little incentive to work these jobs by providing too much benefit in some cases.
