South Africa...

Post by max_tranmere »

I watched that programme about the WAG's in South Africa on BBC3 last night, and these girls went into deprived areas of the country and helped out at brothels, with street people, and so on.

I was obviously aware that poverty and problems existed but I had no idea it was this bad. Last night they focused on an area of Johannesberg where crime, poverty, and danger are so rife that when it gets dark the legions of street people retreat to local churches and public buldings to sleep as it is so dangerous to be out. These people sleep on floors and stairs and there are so many people that they sleep more or less touching each other.

This area of the city was desribed as a 'whites only' district in the days before apartheid ended, and when it did end the white people apparenly fled and the area became a black ghetto. Abandoned buildings, zero investment, just a shanty town that started falling apart. The gangsters, drug dealers and pimps moved in. It is now so dangerous that murder is rife, so is rape, and as on.

I was shocked watching this programme. Did anyone else see it and what did you think?

It's called 'WAGS, Kids, and World Cup Dreams', it was on BBC3 and it was episode 2 last night.
