John Cale was in effect kicked out of the band before the 3rd album (Velvet Underground) was recorded, but he and Lou Reed collaborated again on projects in the 90s, so if there were tensions at the time, they obviously patched things up eventually... enough for the Velvet Underground to reform briefly in 1993

I'm not so sure that Nico was such a welcome presence as she was "forced on to" the group by Warhol, and when the band stopped being managed by Warhol, Nico also went.

One track has been cited as a major influence on the US hip-hop scene. Basement Jaxx, Sugababes, Nine Inch Nails and loads of others have sampled or covered songs from them.
