Wali Razaqi said Lohan has been cast in Inferno, with Bill Pullman attached to portray Playboy tycoon Hugh Hefner.

"We've all thought that Lindsay would be a great choice for a while now, and we're all convinced that she is going to do it," Razaqi told the Los Angeles Times.

"For at least a year, the director and I have gone back and forth imagining how awesome of a performance she could give if she was in the movie."

Lovelace was the star of the notorious 1972 hardcore film Deep Throat, which has grossed over $600 million.

At the time she claimed to have "loved every minute" of making the movie. However, she later became an anti-pornography campaigner and said it was a "crime" that Deep Throat was still shown. She lectured on the "evils" of the porn industry until her death in 2002, aged 53.

Several actresses, including Rose McGowan, Angelina Jolie and Anna Faris, have been linked to the role.

Razaqi said Lohan was perfect casting. "I would say it's probably one of the most challenging roles any actor could play - and not because of the sexual content, necessarily - but more because she was so battered and beat up emotionally, that I think it's going to take everything Lindsay has to really be able to pull it off."

He added: "Not that Lindsay's life is similar in any way - but she's been through a lot of ups and downs. A lot of times you're loved and then you're hated, and I think she can relate to those emotions and feelings. One week she's the 'It' girl and the next, she's the 'What are you doing?' girl."

The 23-year-old actress began her career as a Disney child star but is now more famous for her off-screen exploits.

The film-makers hope to unveil details of Inferno in Cannes next week, but Hollywood insiders question whether Lohan will commit to the project, given her erratic behaviour.

The troubled star has several convictions relating to drugs and drink, and a court sentenced her to a course of rehab in 2007.

Her sporadic film career includes a role as a stripper in the 2007 movie I Know Who Killed Me.

Lohan will be closest in age to Lovelace when she made the film. Jolie must be clocking 40 .. don't recall Deep Throat being marketed as a MILF movie !
