"Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler?"

Post by max_tranmere »

Remember this song from Dads Army? I was in a large sports bar in London watching the England game last night and they played this several times over the PA in the one hour before the match. The mass of people, there must have been 300-400 people in there, sung along like crazy!

It reminds me of when we were playing Germany in Euro 96 at Wembley and the Daily Mirror had that huge computer mock-up of Jurgen Klinsmann in a German war helmet on the front page. Some people take these things too far. I think all this is very unnecessary, and it is offensive to German people.

We are all friends now and people go too far with these things. I said to my friend last night that the bar was out of order to play that song. What do other people think?

Don't mention the war! I did... but I think I got away with it.

That bar was one of the best places to be in London for the game, large screens, huge numbers of people, it was like being at a rock concert. The only negative was the playing of that song, the playing of many other songs - like Three Lions, that New Order track, and a few others - were briliant. The whole place sung along. It was amazing to watch the match on those screens with that atmosphere, despite the poor performance by the the team. So it was good to be there, the only negative was that song. Totally unnecessary.

Perhaps you missed the irony, Max.

A comedy anthem of archaic patriotism for an ever-receding past - what could be more fitting for England fans? Comparing the present squad to Captain Mainwaring & Co isn't far off either.

And Three Lions really is the biggest pile of shit ever recorded.

Have to agree with the Last Word.

The Dad's Army series and the song you refer to is mainly about bumbling English incompetence in dealing with the threat of enemy invasion after the humiliation of the retreat from France.

If you want to see footballing examples of bumbling incompetence, watch England football teams in the last few major tournaments.

Forgive them if you want to, but never forget what the bastards did.
Six years in Der Vaterland gave me a healthy respect for the Holocaust.

Dad's Army may have been portrayed as full of bumbling amateurs, but it was staffed with brave patriots who gave their time for the defence of the country in the dark days after the ignomony of Dunkirk.

I can't see why anyone would get worked up about it to be honest.
