No, to my knowledge Mario Bava did not do hc movies, but he directed great horror/thrillers. Jess Franco directed a lot of shlock under a variety of pseudonyms and some hc movies using "Clifford Brown" I believe.
As for Benezeraf, I am not well acquainted with his work. He pushed the envelope quite a bit in the early-late 1960's with some erotic films which had a lot of problems with censors. And he went on to make hc movies I believe in the late 1970's and 1980's, which some are listed here

as well as in EGAFD.

Had the times been right and Bava been inclined in that direction, he would have made great horror hc movies. Recently saw a remastered uncut version of LA FRUSTA E IL CORPO (THE WHIP AND BODY) (1963) with Christopher Lee and Daliah Lavi. Way ahead of its time (before "Story of O"-1975, and such high-class nonsense) about an obsessive relationship between two individuals, with Lee repeatedly whipping the unforgettable Lavi, who seemed to be be both repulsed and enjoying the trashings. Great atmospheric lighting and camerwork, none of which you will see in Jess Franco's turgid so called horror movies and melodramas.

That is funny, that you bring up LA FRUSTA E IL CORPO. I've seen this one back to back with Francos DE SADE 70 (EUGENIE... THE STORY OF HER PERVERSION...) at the french cinematheque in the 90s. Was fantastic to see these two masterpieces on the big screen. I loved both of them, but I must say, I was absolutely stunned by the Franco film. The camera work and lightning is fantastic in this one. Though films like these really belong to the big screen to fully appreciate them. But I'm with you: I prefer his earlyer work too - till the mid-70s. Nevertheless I wouldn't say his later stuff is the work of hack - I just don't like the direction he'd gone. BTW, the same I could say about Godard: I don't like the direction he'd gone in later years, but I would never call him a hack. I wanna say what I like and want I think is great is not necessarily the same.

And just to get back on topic: You may think want you like of Jess Franco, but he was a pioneer when it comes to "normal'" movies with hc-scenes. ;)

@zebrafink
Mario Bava would never have done hc. He didn't like to do sex scenes. His most erotic film is FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT.

We are really off topic with all these discussions, but I saw EUGENIE in a movie theater as welll, and I have fond memories of the lovely Marie Liljedahl (of INGA fame and who was featured in a Playboy photo layout around that time). Up and until that time Franco seemed to be in a more serious tone, and started making hc and thrash not too long after that. But I don't think Franco was the one who ushered hc scenes in movies. In France the hc floodgates were opened during the mid-latter part of 1975, and Franco was working all over the place..
I don't know for certain which was his first movie (or for that matter which horror movie to get back on topic for Zebrafink's sake in which he first shot hc scenes). Does anyone in this forum know?

Yes, this is true in many cases, but not in all. Often the producers added these scenes, like for the french version of 99 WOMEN, where the scenes were even shot by someone else and some years after the original filming took place. If you're watching such films with later added hc scenes, these uaually really look like the work of some hack.

Not sure if it was really the first one, but FEMALE VAMPIRE originally included a hc scence (unfortunately is was cut from the US-DVD release, but some other versions are complete > e.g. the VHS release from Redemtion Benelux). The film is from 1973.

I am not sure hc movies circulated in France in 1973. There were very severe censorship laws at that time, which were lowered in 1975.
What is the original title of FEMALE VAMPIRE, as I cannot find it in his filmography.

"We are really off topic with all these discussions..." that's true, though personally I like "off-topics", but it's a bit laborious for me to pick out and translate the infos for the zebrafinch with all these questions. :-))) But I think there are already a lot of informations, and I dont want to miss to say "Thank you" to you all!

That's why I was refering to Franco as a pioneer. Eurocine (the production company) were mainly producing for the international maket, so it might be possible that the original version of the film wasn't shown in France before 1975. On the other hand if you're talking to editors working in France at that time, they will tell you they were pretty tricky then and got stuff in the cinemas that was not permitted (e.g. check out the great interview with Gerard Kikonie on Mondo Macabro's new DVD of Jess Franco's SINNER aka DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIC).

That's the one:

Later on a full hc version of the film was released, but these were the usual inserts.
