Duisburg, eh?
Have you ever seen a British programme called "the League of Gentlemen"?
It's something of an acquired taste......

It IS funny, in a very macabre way.
It's also very, very dark and disturbing.

AFAIK it's the only reference that's ever been made in English mainstream culture
to your fair domicile : -)
Thousands of Englishmen who would struggle to find Cologne or Frankfurt on a
map will, however, perorate at length on the glories of Duisburg !!

Almost certainly true.

Perorate? Anyway, the league of gentleman has a character from Duisburg who was partially inspired by this guy and this equally nice chap, though neither of which were from Duisburg.

what horrible guys, dear beutelwolf! I have never heard or read of them. ( in opposite to "Jack the Ripper".)
Anyway, there's no one Germany could be proud of!

And jj: as to "Duisburg", there's no one and nothing the town could be proud of, except the Zoo. (That's my opinion). We have our special kind of idiots like other towns, but no really famous criminal, at least till today. Even our crimes and criminals are grey and pale and boring.

...and the cannibalism theme was of course expanded upon with the character of
Hilary Bliss.

It's a good job these guys worked out their childhood demons via TV- they seem
to have enough of them to keep a thousand psychotherapists in work for decades.

Dudley [West Midlands] has a zoo, of which not even its citizens are proud.
And I bet it has even less character than you claim for Duisburg : -)
