searchin good film out of red light district

Post by zebrafink »

Hello,

Does anybody know real good films acting in the red light district?
those that are rather realistic/authentic. those, that show realisticallly what is going on in brothels

What I have seen till now was very artificially constructed, quite implausible.

Don't hesitate to quote titles even if you are not sure to meet my taste

!bow!

Kind regards

I don't think I have ever seen REALISTIC movies (in mainstream, erotic, or hc movies) set in a brothel. I have even seen clips (censored to some extent) shot at the Nevada Bunny Ranch and they look as tacky and surreal as anything you could imagine. They seem to be playing before the cameras.
I have no idea what looks "realistic" unless you have actually been there, but since the performers (male, female) were all "play-acting", it's hard to make any valued judgment. I mean you have actresses who are not only porn actresses but moonlight as escorts, and they do really not need to "pretend" or play-act but at the end, you don't know whether setting and the things that go on the brothel (a movie set, or actual brothel?) are anywhere near reality.

However if you are asking what are some titles of movies set in a brothel, that is something else, and I have a vague feeling this has been asked before in this forum.

As Len says, reality [or at least verisimilitude] is a tough call on this one.
I can't think of any echt brothel flicks; the nearest I can get, off the top of
my head, is this. Set in a sex-club, and although it does feature porno regulars
such as Lenka Seborova, many of the featured girls seemed to me to be genuine
[albeit exceptionally pretty] 'working-girls'.

"a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the
signification...."

A number of films featured brothels and prostitutes but you could not say they were anywhere realistic by any stretch of the imagination, even though the filmakers and/or performers would be familiar with the actual workings of a real brothel.
BABYFACE (1977,VCA)
BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN HONG KONG (1987,Essex)
BEYOND DESIRE (1986,VCA)
LADY BY NIGHT (1987,Caballero)

If you were to view PRETTY BABY (1978, dir: Louis Malle) I don't think you could conclude that you have a pretty good idea how a New Orleans brothel operated a century ago, or if you viewed BELLE DE JOUR (1967, dir: Luis Bunuel) you would easily determine that that Parisian brothel (where Catherine Deneuve moonlights) was in any way realistic.

As I mentioned in my earlier post The Moonlite Bunny Ranch (Nevada) was featured on HBO's America Undercover show specials, Cathouse (2002) and Cathouse 2: Back in the Saddle (2003). This led to the series Cathouse: The Series, which aired in two seasons in 2005 and 2007.
It gives a look at the women, owner, customers, and decor. However to call it any more "realistic" than a fictional film (hardcore or mainstream) is wildly speculative.

Not about brothels, but the most depressing porn fictional film about the descent into prostitution and thus set sort of in a red light district (of a port) is The Blue Balloon. It is the opposite of glamorous. and definitely not erotic. A girl says goodbye to her boyfriend who has joined the navy. She is then assaulted and forced into prostitution, gradually descending into turning tricks on the street until eventually she turns a trick for her boyfriend who is on leave. They don't recognise each other. Some would say a good film, but certainly not a sexy one.

Some of the scenes in Hot Pursuit were set and shot in a real brothel or sex club.

Brothels in mainstream movies in particular and even hardcore movies are not seemingly a happy place to be in.
The other problem is how do you define a "brothel". In many european movies (and even US movies) you may see a few women lying around entertaining men/guests. Is it a strip club, a sex club, a bar, just a place where people come together and have sex. You rarely see money change hands.
Since in a number of countries brothels are considered illegal places, it is easier for mainstream movies and hard core movies just portray certain women as prostitutes/call girls/escorts not necessarily operating out of a full-bloom bordello.

One possible title:

Big Sister Club (Red Productions) 2004

Set in Prague brothel/club.
First scene in swimming pool and bar may match your inquiry.

One good film that appeared fairly realistic to me is Working Girls, a mainstream movie. It is perhaps not as bleak as most of this ilk, but certainly not a barrel of laughter either.

There are plenty of good porn flicks set in brothels, but realism is very low on their agenda, understandably so.

Perhaps it may be worth quoting from an old (1969 and tattered) edition of Halliwell's Film Guide (I have lying around) on the subject of brothels:
"Brothels were fairly prevalent in American silent movies, but the Hays Code banished them and for many years one had to look to the French for such revelations as could be found in LE PLAISIR and HUNGRY FOR LOVE[ADUA E LE COMPAGNE] [1960]. In recent years however the doors have opened. LADY L [1965] showed the funny side of brothel life, ULYSSES [1967] the vulgar, HOUSE OF A THOUSAND DOLLS [La casa de las mil mu?ecas][1967] the fantastic, HOW SWEET IT IS [1968] the charming, THE BALCONY [1963] the expressionist; while A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE [1962] concentrated on the miserable aspects and even sported a lesbian madam. Nowadays every western has one, notabnly WATERHOLE 3 [1967], FIVE CARD STUD [1968] and HANG 'EM HIGH [1968]."

It is a fact that brothels are usually seen in period-set movies, and western movies (for example the critically acclaimed UNFORGIVEN with Clint Eastwood) contain the lion's share of such settings.

You only have to do a search for keywords like "brothel", "bordello" or "whorehouse' at IMBD.com to see how many movies there are where brothels have been present in, in more than just a passing reference.
