What I meant by my statement that Hungarians seem to be over-represented, they really do seem to be. The stats listed in this thread shows that there are more Hungarian women than Russians.

Russia has a population of 140 million. Hungary's population is less than 10 million. That's what I meant by disproportional. Ain't nothing wrong with it, I was just wondering.

You are a bit late to the party.
Hungary and Czech Republic have about similar total population of 10 million.
Both EBI and IAFD show about equal number of female performers (active and
inactive).
Hungary is way physically closer to western European countries (France, Italy, etc)
than Russia and other adjoining satellites. Hungary has always aspired more
to democratic freedoms than other iron curtain countries. It is quite logical that
you would find more porn production there than elsewhere in eastern Europe.

While porn production in Russia (St. Petersburg area) may have been more relaxed a
couple of years ago, the situation is not the same now. Some product was
being shot there by foreigners (Omar Galanti, Giorgio Grandi, etc) not for
for local consumption but rather for foreign export. In essence it is officially illegal
to produce and sell pornography in Russia, and penalties are quite stiff.
Russia is just not set up for that type of legitimate enterprise, so you would not
expect to have that many porn performers to come out of there. Population has
nothing to do with it, nor the economic climate. Sexually and socially certain
liberties and activities are suppressed. What is there to wonder?

Obviously the basis is a liberal and laic culture. India, islamic countries, China, etc. give not the conditions for a girl to do porn: life itself would be in danger. But where this kind of culture is present, the impulses to do porn are fundamentally 2, I think: the passion for sex and for exibition; the need of money. I think that the first one could produce just a limited number of performers (and this is the case of Italy: not many performers, often not so young, who find in porn the way to realize their phantasies); the second one could produce a massive phaenomenon, like in eastern Europe. In the USA richness is distributed in not uniform way: poor people is poorer than in Europe; and there are more possibility to have an economical ruin: so, even if the country is rich, there are many girls who have not much money and who live close to the richness and smell it, with the possibility, if they had money, to profit of the benefits of a rich society. Each country has its own oddities, freedoms, social/economic climate.
If the US were a third world country one could easily and erroneously
conclude that so much porn is produced because of the size of
the population and poor economic conditions.

Russia may have the numbers (for population), and economic conditions
are not the best, but many freedoms are repressed, and we know that that the
women and men are not sexually repressed. But the state makes it difficult for
porn production. Just look at the high rate of abortion it has.

Italy also has its problems. Technically it is illegal to produce porn, and tax
laws and tax evasion are troublesome for porn production. Many porn performers
if you want to call them that have other major sidelines to fall back on (club
appearances, stripping, escorting, etc). There is not much porn culture there,
in the same sense that you would find in neighboring countries like France.

The sex and porn revolution started in the Scandinavian countries in the late
1960's and yet you can neither say they are poor countries or that they do not
enjoy basic freedoms. But today they produce very little porn. Violence in mainstream
movies is heavily censored from what I understand.

Why is there so much porn in the US? Democratic freedoms, social climate,
rebel and entrepreneurial attitude, the yearning to get to the top of the heap, to
make money (and quickly). Why would a 19 year old girl, with no specific
skills, and little or no desire (or the financial means) to continue to finish high
school or go to college, want to work in a factory/supermarket/small outfit
for minimum wage, when she can get around $500 for 2 hours work to fuck
in front of a video camera? I don't think it has to do that much with being
sexually active or an exhibitionist or that burning desire to fuck on camera.
They say that for the fan base and for general consumption, but it isn't
the reason they are doing porn.

The main and only reason is the money involved (and the relative "freedom" they
think they derive from that activity). The average "shelf-life" for a US (or even Euro)
porn performer is approximately 3 years. Many of these have no desire to
make that a long-term commitment. Get in, make some money, and get out.
Some who stuck it out for long have crashed and burned (see the recent Jenna
Jameson "soap opera"). It may have been sexy to aspire to such fame and
fortune some years back, but who really wants to be the next Jenna in the present
US porn environment?
