BBFC speak about reviewing R18s

Thought some of you may be interested in this. I recently asked the BBFC through their site how they went about watching these obviously very explicit videos for consideration for the R18 certificate; My letter first then their reply.

Dear Sirs


I am hoping you would take the time to answer this question, which is, by
the way, not written in an immature context. I assume to watch a film for
classification, several people watch the film, then suggest a rating or
cuts to be made if necessary. How on earth do you go about rating something
that from the start is obviously going to be an R18? Is it the same
procedure, i.e. several people sit in the same room and rate it? I simply
cannot imagine this being the case, unless the persons involved have a zero
embarrassment factors or are not paying attention properly; nor can I
imagine it would be any single person's job to view them on their own as I
assume one person's views would not necessarily match those of another.


How do these films get rated fairly?


Again, please don't think me facetious, I am genuinely intrigued.

And the reply:

"'R18' videos are classified in exactly the same way as all other videos -
two examiners sit in a room and watch them. If there is any requirement
for cuts the video may be referred to another team of examiners and will
also be watched by a senior examiner and/or a member of management."


Sounds like an interesting job.

'Interesting job' - are you kidding? Even with porn videos that I like, I spend half the time on FF. The poor sods at the BBFC have to watch every minute!

"Interesting" in the broadest sense of the word. "Different" would have been a better description. Think about how it would be if you were paid (but ultimately forced through the constraints of your job) to have to watch Barney's Alphabet Adventure, have a discussion, then with the same person, watch Rocco's Anal Fisting Asscapades in the same morning.

I hear Floella Benjemen woked there for a while as a reviewer. You think she saw much anal fisting?
