REPLICATED discs are glass masterd to pressed/injected media.

DUPLICATED discs are burned on to R media.

So from the heading "DVD REPLICATION" they are Glass mastered.

The main problem with burnt dvds is said to be that the laser has to work harder to read the data and as such can cease working quicker than when using pressed dvds however I dont know if there is any truth in this.
Quality ????????????

"is there much difference in quality/finished product?"

Not a diddle squat.

Most prodz master to DVDR in either 5 or 9 format using + or - discs. Then the replicator creates a master from the original master disc so the finished DVD5 or DVD9 contains the same information as the original DVDR so it's the same quality. Some Prodz do master to DLT or other forms of final digital media but the author process has to be done out source at extra cost so much is now done via DVDR enabling the prodz to do the whole process.

There used to be issues with DVDR with the old .5 lazers but now even the cheap ?22 players have .9's on board so they read and play no problem. There is still issues with scratching on the protective coating but the new Verbatim discs are looking to have that sorted with antscratch.

The shops still seem a bit wiery of DVDR but I am noteing that more of the smaller producers are only offering DVDR so perhaps that may change

There is a difference although if the content isn't all that long (<2 hours)and not all that many DVD's are required then burning them is an option and is certainly cost effective.

Longer than this then you need to be looking at dual layer DVD's (DVD-9) which can only really be replicated.

There are many advantages in replicating over burning with virtually all DVD's ligitimately sold being replicated although it is a volume game which is reflected in the cost although when you consider pukka DVD's i.e. fully printed, packed and cello-wrapped cost: -
DVD-5 <60p each
DVD-9 <73p each
Is it worth cutting corners and burning?

Time means nothing in DVD land it's all about file sizes. It is possible to get up to 6 hours on a single layer DVD5.

"Longer than this then you need to be looking at dual layer DVD's (DVD-9) which can only really be replicated."
I'm suprised no one has picked you up on this but DVD9 can also be burnt and in fact all the new pioneers are dual layer burners.

I'll assume your replicating in 1500's so a run of DVD5 will cost you ?900 at your quoted prices. So if you've dropped 5 films on the market your outlay for replication is ?4500. Thats a lot of dough for some of the smaller guys to have sitting in their sheds for 6-12 months but if they burn they can DUPLICATE to order and spend the ?4500 on feature 6.

So if you are Fed in a shed with a budget WHY would you want ?4500 not working?

DVDR is great for the smaller guys

Its true that replication has shot down in price and if you can shift 1000 finished product then its a top way to go but like Bill says most of the small guys and also a lot of the bigger guys in Europe are having big difficultys to shift 500 never mind 1000. Ive released 8 films from glass master now, 5 titles in Europe and 3 titles in the UK. ive got left 3500 finnished ready to sell dvds stuck in my house in Amsterdam that will never sell unless i sell for chips and the UK releases are thankfully in stuck in my distributers wearhouse. Dvd is a dying market now in Europe and a lot of producers are starting to resort to copystaions and princo disks. Obviously it dosent look as good and for anybody who takes pride in what they produce will be dissapointed to realise that this is the only way to do it unless you have either a decent distributer who can shift the numbers or like bill says a fuckin big shed.
