O/T Mysterious email

Post by ted »

Dear all,

I was wondering if any egg-head could offer an opinion on the following:

Having just bought a new computer, and having just re-started using Outlook Express (version 6) I have an email in my 'sent' file to an address I know nothing about (xdvcv@yahoo.com) and there is nothing in the message bar either, although the file properties list it as being 1kb in size.

Is this some sort of sneaky virus or something, polluting my shiny new computer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers,

Ted

Can't answer the mystery of the outbound email, but in general terms the flaws in OE are responsible for a big chunk of the propogation of viruses. If people dumped it and used an alternative there would be less of these viruses whizzing around.

I'd sound out whoever you bought the computer from

Sounds like they did a test run...maybe?

Viruses are incoming not outgoing

If you had a virus your anti-virus software would have told you
Do a full scan if you want piece of mind

cheers

Mozilla and Opera are both free and excellent. Each has a good email system. I never use any MS product unless it's absolutely necessary, and neither IE nor Outlook fall into that category. Opera allows pop-ups to be switched on or off with two clicks, which is very useful.

Yeah, I agree w/ this. I am no expert, but I get several anti-virus email newsletters, & it is common, if not routine, to see that a particular virus "Attacks tha address book in Outlook" or "Exploits a flaw in OE" or the like. Malicious hackers target Microsoft stuff for maximum effect.
I am still using IE, but I keep up w/ the patches/fixes, other than the SP1.
