Discovered a fair few stock music outfits out there after couple of hours. A quick glance at www.stockmusic.com licenses seem messy, www.stockmusic.net not so bad. Workth spending a few quid on some music for professional work.
Some bands and amateurs put some stuff out under creative commons licensing, more often than not prohibiting commercial use. Some seems ok.
Any band members listening - why not record some original material, make it creative commons and reap the reward in marketing profile!

"Classical stuff" is not "free" - the composer's busy decomposing, but the performers of the particular recording, and the label which released it, retain rights. So if you slap Beethoven's 9th on your porn, Beethoven won't come after you, but Deutsche Grammofon, Herbert von Karajan and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra may (and they have a minibus).
You may say that no-one could ever tell whose particular performance of a classical piece is being used. But they have sneaky ways of determining this

Author of music has copyright.
Author of lyrics has copyright.
A performance of a piece also has copyright.
Copyright rules in USA different to UK. Rights can last up to 70 years fter death of author. It used to be shorter but politicos were bought up by music and entertainment industry and the whole thing is fucking mad in the internet era.
When you buy rights to using music there is often a catch like not for public performance or not for web use. Some is open for use so avoid the restricted music.
Some musicians like to make some of their material freely available. There ought to be more. This may or may not be licensed for use in commercial products.
Its a minefield which explains the crap use of music in much porn.
