Satellite Tech help please

Post by The Healer »

Due to some rather large trees over the road my satellite reception is now virtually zilch. Even SKY have advised me to cancel my subs 'til Autumn to save money.

If I had a moveable dish fitted can I avoid this type of problem? I would like to retain the sports channels, discovery etc.

Also can you get any quality porn thru the cable companies, eg NTL or Telewest?

Thanks in advance.

You won't get quality porn (i.e. hardcore) on cable any more than you get it on Sky. You need Hotbird and/or Astra 1 and a different receiver/dish set up. Do a search on here and the Archive site for lots of previous discussion (especially Magoo).

It very much depends on whether you're talking about a small clump of trees which just happen to block your line-of-sight to the Astra 2 satellite group or a bloody great line of trees which block the whole of your southern aspect. If it's the latter you're buggered, but if it's the former you might be able to get a sight of Hotbird/Astra 1 to one side of the trees by using a separate larger dish (80cm or 1m depending on where you are) or a motorised dish of similar size and a double feed LNB if you still want Sky on the same dish when you can get it.

If you think you might be able to get the Hotbird/Astra 1 bit of the sky get a professional site survey done before you splash out any dosh.

I recommend some serious tree pruning with a chainsaw! Or move house! If the tree is very close to your dish then you are buggered. Moving the dish higher up the building or further along the building will work, but trees grow, so it may be a temporary solution depending on the distance & line of sight to the satellite. As for porn, avoid cable and Sky as it's all softcore crap. For hard core you will need a dish looking at other satellites, not Sky.
Buy a copy of "What Satellite" magazine, find your nearest independent satellite dealer(this means NOT Dixons/Curry's etc!!) & tell him your story. He may be able to do a site survey & determine where to re-site your Sky dish & should also be able to tell you what, if any, other satellites you can view from your place with another, bigger (80cm minimum)dish. He will no doubt sell you what you need & install it for you as well.
On here, contact Magoo, cos he's yer man where satellites are concerned, but contact him direct to avoid annoying the moderators with an "off topic" post!
Good luck!

Unfortunately we are talking a long line of trees about 35ft, and behind them the true villain, a 60ft bloody great Oak!

Having searched the web I notice no ferkin cable company covers my area so that avenue is snookered also.

What narks me is I can get some of the free to air channels but no damn Sky. Most annoying when I am trying to watch Tiger Woods or Premier League on Sky Sports.

Oh dear I may have to start reading books again!
