Wow...I didn't know that! Well, if he can get results like that with an XL1 (or whatever upgrade version), then I think we really should be aspiring a little higher in terms of our finished products.
As you said though, Stonevid...as long as it sells and turns a profit, why bother to improve it (or yourself)?
I'm gonna have to watch 28 Days Later again now, having found this out...

This argument that porn gets better the more money's thrown at it is so stupid. Bottom line, if you want to make a quality product but you haven't got the money then you need to get creative. There is always a way.
I've got a series on TVX at the moment called Glam Hell and I'm in post-production on another series called Cocotte starring Karen Wood -- each show done in a knackered East End flat or house; location cost for each show = ?150. The Cocotte stuff is looking soooo cool -- it's actually looking better than stuff I've done where the location cost me nearly 3 times as much (I'm a slow learner). I just took reference pics of all the rooms I was going to shoot in (after emptying out most of the furniture, just leaving a couple of key items) and went out and bought the wardrobe to match so there was a basic colour scheme happening for each of the shows; then I hired a make-up artist to complete the look; and then I shot all the scenes with my XM1 with natural light. (You don't even need an XL. I was actually asked that yesterday -- XM or XL and I said XM, definitely, to get in there close, relatively unobtrusive, easier to handle.) Each of the shows has a different light and colour to it and I'm just fucking happy as Larry with the results. The more you use that camera the more you realise what incredible results you can get with natural light. Then add a bit of Magic Bullet for Editors and it even looks like it's been shot on film. Superb.
So yeah, some producers would scoff at the idea of getting a make-up girl or buying the wardrobe, but at the end of the day it really ain't costing me the earth to put it together. I probably 'spend' the most money on taking so long over my editing.
And I do actually know, whether anybody actually enjoys my stuff or not, that one of the reasons TVX commission me to do it is because I "take care", that I like to be creative with my shows (so long as I don't completely disappear up my arse) and that I try to edit them until they're as right as I can get them. Those guys support me the whole way -- they commission me to produce what they perceive to be a quality product and in return they pay me a decent wage.
So, davewells, if I were a producer I wouldn't give you a single penny for your "more polished type of production". I'd like to see what you could come up with without the money first. I don't want to blow my own trumpet here -- there's often a lot wrong with my stuff -- but you and that Dibble bloke do drone on and on and on and all too often it's complete and utter bollocks.

I'm not in the business but I agree with Andy. Money isnt a guarantee of good product. Not in porn or the mainstream films, as a viewer i don't care how much money was thrown at the film. Lets face it we aren't watching porn for the scenery, so location isn't really an issue. If the action is good and the girl/girls are hot, I'm happy whatever it cost to make.
As an aside, any of you film makers or photographers that can persuade the amazing Amanda Palmer to make a comeback will get my gratitude and my cash!!! Anyone who doesnt remember her she was the girl who played the mechanic in a excellent Ben Dover episode. The usual Ben Dover quality, amazing looking girl and humour. She is HOT

Well Andy that all sounds pretty groovy and I dig what you are saying. Indeed I've just spent the last 24 hours applying some serious ?Final Cut Pro? post production to one of my old glamour shoots - colour correction, custom graphics, composed music and re-scored half the movie, all in preparation for a DVD re-release. It's true you can do some pretty impressive stuff with pro software, a serious computer (Apple G5 64bit Dual Processor in my case) and a bit of flair. I?ve no doubt that if I had the time I could come up with something pretty stunning. But I ain't going to do all that just for "a wage." Though I may do it just to amuse myself. No you don't need a 'Private' sized budget to shoot quality stuff. You just need a good semi-pro cam, a little imagination and flair. Serious computer gear and a the ability to work it all (buying a paintbrush doesn't make you Michael Angelo.)
Of course I could have said that before, but I wanted to help Dave stir the pot as his tirade did touch on things that have been getting up my nose of late. My main beef is yeah, you can do all that technical and creative stuff, but why bother when most of the models nowadays look totally bland, sexless and about as inspiring as a wet weekend in Wigan? I can't work up any interest in working with them and my punters wouldn?t buy it if I did. But sat TV would buy it, for a fee that might equate to "a wage," because they're not bothered about how uninteresting the models are, they just need content, any content. They can't shut the station down for a couple of days because they haven't got anything interesting or anything worth watching to show. They just need to fill that air space. Consequently, they will buy in naff stuff featuring naff participants, who just aren?t sexually interesting or appealing. They're lowering the quality hurdles and this affects the whole adult scene. Which is why I was miffed at 'em.
I want to do an Andrew Blakey or Mike Ninn style movie. I don't see dough being the main hurdle, it's just who the fuck would the leading ladies be? That's what I see as being the main problem. Can anyone suggest some current models with the looks, class, and glamour of Erica Bella, Lea Martini, Sylvia Saint and Laure Sainclair? Or the sexual credentials of Toni Francis, Stacy Owen and Danni Ashe? If I?m going to make a class movie I need class dolly birds, birds with a bit of mystique about them, not mundane Shazza's and Tracy's or anyone who looks like they just been thrown off the set of 'Big Bother.'
